Late
Fall is a great time to get out in the garden and take care of
a few things before winter weather sets in. A walk around your
garden can prompt thoughts about plants to move, plants to add,
projects to plan, etc. As long as the soil is still workable,
this time of year can be a relaxing time of fine-tuning your garden.
- Colorful
pansies and ornamental cabbage and kale can be planted to brighten
up a walkway or planter.
- Spring
blooming bulbs can be planted to provide color in your garden
from late winter through spring. Bulbs are best planted in groups
or masses of color for the best show. Fragrant bulbs can be
planted along a pathway.
- Birdfeeders
filled with black-oil sunflower seed or Lyric Supreme bird seed
will attract a wide variety of colorful songbirds. Fill thistle
feeders with thistle seed to attract bright yellow goldfinches.
Late fall and winter is the time to put out suet, a high energy
food, to attract woodpeckers to the garden.
- Late
Fall is a perfect time to start indoor bulbs, such as Paperwhites
and Amaryllis, for holiday blooms. Paperwhites have fragrant
white flowers on slim stems that are wonderful massed in low
containers with decorative stones around them. They are one
of the few bulbs that do not need to be planted in soil to bloom.
It takes about 6 weeks for paperwhites to bloom. Amaryllis is
a large bulb that puts up a strong stem topped by large, red,
pink, white, or bicolor flowers. Amaryllis take about 8 weeks
to bloom. Indoor bulbs are great hostess gifts, and they are
also a wonderful project for children.
- Cyclamen
is a colorful indoor flowering plant that enjoys a cool, bright
location in the house. Cyclamen will bloom for several weeks,
and look especially pretty combined with other houseplants in
decorative baskets.
