Question:
What should
I do to prepare the garden for Winter?
Answer:
Most perennials can be cut back, except ones that
have late Fall or Winter interest such as Ornamental Grasses
and seed-bearing Purple cone flower or Blackeyed Susan. After
tidying up a bed, spread a 1-2" layer of mulch around all
of the plants. The mulch will add a finished look to the area,
plus help to keep the bed moist during the Winter.
Most evergreen
shrubs can be lightly pruned, except Azaleas and Rhododendrons
which have already set their buds for next years' flowers.
Question:
Can I continue
to plant in November and December?
Answer:
Yes, planting can continue as long as the soil is still workable.
The main thing to be aware of is the need to water newly planted
trees, shrubs, perennials, and bulbs well, especially if we
have not had significant rainfall.
Question:
How do I
take care of my pointsettias for Christmas?
Answer:
We have a handout explaining Pointsettia care that is available
in our Greenhouse.
