Pond Formulas

< back to gardening tips

Liner
(Pond Length + 7 feet) x (Pond Width + 7 feet) = size of liner needed
i.e., if you want a pond 4'x7': (4'+7') x (7'+7') = 11'x14'

Volume of Water
Length x Width x Depth x 7.5 (the number of gallons in a cubic foot) = the number of gallons of water in the pond.

Pump Sizes

Fountain: Spouting figures = 90 to 170 gallons per hour pump.
Waterfall: For every inch of width at the widest point in the stream, multiply by 100 GPH (gallons per hour) to get the pump size. If the size is not a normal pump size, go to the next largest one. i.e., 24" x 100 = 2,400 gallons per hour pump. 1/4" deep when full.
Biofilter: Circulate half the volume of water in the pond per hour. i.e., if you have a 700 gallon pond, you need a 350 gallons per hour pump.

Plants

Shade Coverage: 60% to 70% of the pond surface covered

Under Water Grasses /
Oxygenating Plants:

In a pond less than 25 square feet - one clump per square foot.

In a pond more than 25 square feet - one clump per 2 square feet.

Fish:

  • In a pond less than 25 square feet - 1" of fish per square feet of pond.
  • In a pond more than 25 square feet - 2" of fish per square feet of pond.
